These words were used to describe Ed Newton when the creation of the NBVFD Ed Newton Scholarship was announced as a tribute to his dedication to the fire service, the NBVFD and the City of Nassau Bay.

Ed has a long history with the volunteer fire service, beginning as a firefighter in 1951.  At the urging of Ron Nelson, a co-worker and fellow Nassau Bay resident, Ed joined the NBVFD in 1984 after retiring from Arco, and has been an integral part of its operation ever since.  In the 21 years he was a member, Ed has served as firefighter and several officer positions including Maintenance Captain and his current position as Procurement Officer.  Perhaps more noteworthy, however was the roles he adopted within the Department as mentor and friend.  As many members will tell you, Ed was an inspiration to all through his willingness to share his knowledge and experiences, both of firefighting and life.

As a tribute to his sense of civic duty, in addition to the countless hours Ed spent volunteering with the fire department over the years, he also found time to serve on City committees, such as the Board of Adjustment and Homeowners Association.

Moving to Nassau Bay in 1972, Ed and his wife Marge have watched the city grow for 29 years, while still maintaining the hometown environment they cherish.

Blessed with 3 daughters and two sons, they also enjoy spending time with their 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Ed Newton passed away in November 2005. The members of the NBVFD will miss him very much. The Ed Newton Scholarship Fund will continue to be awarded and Ed's name and the things he did for us will live on.

The NBVFD Ed Newton Scholarship recognizes individuals with outstanding character and sense of civic duty by providing financial assistance to current and retired NBVFD members and their families to pursue educational opportunities at recognized educational facilities.
